Adopt-a-Highway Clean-up

Plumas Audubon Society has supported the Caltrans Adopt-a-Highway program for a number of years. We have  adopted a stretch of Highway 89 from the Hwy 70 junction (Greenville Wye) to Indian Falls.

We have had a relatively small crew of dedicated volunteers who have maintained this section of highway to keep it litter free and to protect Indian Creek from pollution. We are seeking the help of our members to bring our stretch of Highway 89 back into good shape.

We will meet at the Greenville Wye at 9:00 AM for a safety brief. All necessary gear will be provided. Bring water, lunch, sun protection, closed-toed shoes, and your enthusiasm!

Please contact Faith Strailey, Audubon Board member, at (530) 283-2604 if you are interested.

June

Saturday, June 15, 2024
9:00 AM to 11:30 AM

Let's Go Birding Together!

Let's Go Birding Together walks are for everyone who loves birds and the outdoors. We welcome those who identify as LGBTQ, allies, families, and anyone who wants to enjoy an outdoor experience that is inclusive. Why do we do this?  Because the outdoors has not always been a welcoming place for LGBTQ people and Audubon wants to help change that.

Meet at Auston Road off County Road A-23 on the west side of the Sierra Valley Preserve (map)
at 9:00 A.M. Attendees can enter our raffle to win prizes provided by The Lost Sierra Company, The Brewing Lair, and our sponsoring organizations! A special prize will be provided for the best bird-themed costume, as voted on by attendees.

We will wrap up the bird walk around 11:30 AM and invite you to share a beverage and food with us at The Brewing Lair immediately after.

Birdability Week (October 21–27, 2024) is an annual celebration dedicated to birders with disabilities and other health concerns. The goal of this event is to introduce birding to those that don’t feel it’s an activity suited to their specific needs and to ensure that birding is a joyful and enriching experience for everyone.

Plumas Audubon Society's Birdability event will offer several birding options for all abilities! Meet at 10am at the Quincy High School Parking lot, where four options for birding will be detailed and attendees can choose their adventure. Binoculars will be available to borrow!

We will have a stationary car-accessible spotting scope set up by the solar panels overlooking American Valley. There will also be two “walking” options: one paved wheelchair accessible option along the bike path from the high school lower parking lot to the Learning Landscapes classroom, and an easy flat-terrain dirt path option from the Learning Landscape to the spotting scope at the solar panels. Both options are under a quarter mile.

At the Learning Landscape we will have a seating area set up for stationary birding and “bird-listening” for those with mobility or visual impairments or who might otherwise have trouble spotting the birds. There will also be shade with crafts and coloring pages for neurodivergent brains that need something to do while waiting for the birds to come to us!
