The PEEP program aims to help youth explore and connect with their local ecosystems, natural resources, and public lands; make associations about the health of their surrounding natural environment to the communities in which they live; and then connect with and actively contribute to their community’s well-being while also benefiting the environment through service-learning projects. Under the PEEP project Plumas Audubon Society worked in partnership with Plumas Unified School District (PUSD) public schools, Plumas Charter School (PCS), and Plumas-Sierra 4-H (4H) to develop curriculum for K-12 youth that, through the lens of “Birds and Climate Change”, offers locally relevant and place-based learning while at the same time addresses the broader concept and consequences of climate change. PEEP curriculum is centered around field trips, classroom lessons, informal education activities, and service-learning projects that are led by PAS and PUSD / PCS teachers.
Plumas Audubon has conducted numerous school-wide Bird Days at the following schools:
Greenville Elementary School
Quincy Elementary School
Chester Elementary School
Portola Elementary School
These school-wide Bird Days are a lot of fun. We take over the campus and bring many presenters who cover topics such as: Feathers, Beaks, Migrations, Banding, Bird ID, Bird Flight, Bird Sounds, Drawing, Story Telling, Bird Feet, Eating Like a Bird, Binoculars, Bird ID Books, and more!
Plumas Audubon Society is grateful to the Union Pacific Community Ties Giving Program for their generous support of our Plumas Environmental Education Program (PEEP) in 2024 and 2025. Their funding allowed us bring hands-on, nature-based learning experiences to local students, fostering a love for wildlife and conservation in the next generation.
Thank you, Union Pacific, for investing in our community and the future of environmental education!
